News: UEFA Champions League

Some of the competition’s greatest goalscorers

12.05.2022 - There has always been something inherently special about the UEFA Champions League. Whether it is the dramatic comebacks or the spine-tingling theme tune that is bellowed out in stadiums across Europe, the competition has captivated our attention.
Since the tournament was given a fresh reboot in 1993 when it replaced the European Cup, the Champions League continues to be a big talking point among fans, and it is largely positive.

Perhaps an intriguing focal point has been looking back at some of the competition’s sharpest shooters and how they have left an indelible mark.

Naturally, the goalscorer markets in the Champions League will spark a lot of interest. The players mentioned have raised the bar for a long time, and many of the best betting sites will have specials covering them in the competition for you to wager on, with diverse methods for deposts such as online betting with PayPal offered at many of the top operators for the Champions League, such as Betway.

We like to celebrate the achievements of the competition’s greatest goalscorers, so let’s take a closer look at the current top three. Please note before that these statistics were correct at the time of writing.

Cristiano Ronaldo (140)
Cristiano Ronaldo continues to astound and he has been in an unrelenting battle with Lionel Messi to be crowned the world’s best player. The Portuguese superstar has racked up big numbers in the Champions League, with 140 goals paying testament to this.

Having won the competition five times in his career, Ronaldo is one of the most decorated footballers of his generation, and it is remarkable to think that he is the only player to date to net in three Champions League finals. He is an extraordinary talent and he is arguably the best player ever to turn out in the competition.

Lionel Messi (125)
Currently plying his trade with Paris Saint-Germain, Messi will forever be remembered for his exploits with Barcelona in this competition. With 125 goals to his name, Messi will probably wish he was a little closer to Ronaldo’s astonishing tally, but depending on how long he plays for, maybe, just maybe, Messi could overtake him.

In terms of his stats, Messi has scored eight Champions League hat-tricks and he has been the top scorer (or joint top scorer) in six Champions League campaigns. Take a bow, Messi!

Robert Lewandowski (86)
Robert Lewandowski is one of the most feared strikers in Europe at the moment. Although things didn’t transpire the way that Bayern fans would have hoped against Villarreal in the quarter-finals, Lewandowski continues to tear things up on one of Europe’s biggest stages, and he is a nightmare for defenders to handle.

At the moment, Lewandowski is this season’s top scorer in the Champions League with 13 goals to his name. He has netted eight times with his right foot, while he has scored three with his left. Karim Benzema is on his coattails as the Real Madrid hitman is just one strike behind him.
